Museum Description
Nestled within the historic Ruddle Valley within 26 acres of woodland walks and amongst the preserved reamins of two former Victorian clay works, Wheal Martyn is the UK's only China Clay Museum. This truly unique site tells the story of Cornwall's billion pound China Clay indsutry and the lives of those who lived and worked in the shadows on the white pyramids. We boast Coprnwall's largest working water wheel and ancient buildings as well as a vast collection of industry artefacts, photographs and tools including vintage commercial vehicles and a locomotive. In addition there is a fantastic interactive exhibitiuon centre and at the pinnacle of the site a spectacular view into a modern working clay pit where you can witness today's mining in action! There is also a nature trail and adjoining 'clay trails' cycle routes.
For children there is a fantastic children's challenge trail, play area and free activity sheets as well as hands on exhibitions.
