Museum Description
The Town's art collection is one of the most important in Cornwall, and features works by major artists such as Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones, George Frederic Watts, John Opie, George Romney, Sir Alfred Munnings, Thomas Gainsborough, John Singer Sargent, Charles Napier Hemy, Henry Scott Tuke, Dame Laura Knight, William Strang, Lee Miller, Ben Nicholson and Francis Bacon. The gallery boasts one of the most important print collections outside of London which includes 'The Art Fund Hugh Stoneman Archive' and 'The Art Fund's Naomi G. Weaver Gift'. It also houses the famous painting The Lady of Shallot by John William Waterhouse, and mounts an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions.
The gallery has gained nationwide recognition for its innovative education programme. It has been nominated for fourteen major awards including Britain's biggest arts prize: The Gulbenkian Award.
The gallery runs regular family workshops for a wide range of visitors from Baby Paint to Age Concern. We particularly welcome visits from special needs groups and adults with severe learning difficulties.
The staircase gallery displays some of the most inspirational works produced during gallery workshops.
