Newlyn Art Gallery

Newlyn Art Gallery

Newlyn Art Gallery exists because of a long history of contemporary art making in the far west of Cornwall and has celebrated contemporary art and supported the artists that produce it for more than 120 years. In 2007 the gallery reopened after a period of renovation with the addition of a new pavilion.

At this time the gallery also launched its new space The Exchange in the centre of Penzance, which has enabled the organisation to take on larger, more ambitious projects across its two sites. Together the galleries continue to present contemporary work in all media by regional, national and international artists, with a programme of events, activities and education.

  • The Exchange in Penzance

At The Exchange the huge gallery is regularly used as a project space in which artists and curators test new ideas. A major contemporary art space, The Exchange enables audiences to see work on a scale never before accessible in the region. It also hosts live performances.

  • The Building

The Exchange, situated just off historic Chapel Street, has a striking glass facade running the entire length of the building. A dramatic, changing light display, designed by Penwith-based artist Peter Freeman illuminates the glass panels according to the time of day and year.

  • The Studio Cafe at Newlyn

Making the most of its waterfront position, the Studio Café has sweeping views of Mount’s Bay plus a secluded garden area. Locally roasted coffee and Cornish cakes are available throughout the day. Dogs are allowed, making it a great place to pop in for refreshments.

  • Ceramics at Newlyn

Penwith ceramicist Jack Doherty has designed a range of jugs, sugar bowls and serving platters, reflecting the colours and textures of Cornwall, and which are available for sale in the Gallery shop.

  • Shops at Newlyn and The Exchange

There are shops at both galleries stocking an eclectic variety of books and magazines focusing on drawing and painting, as well as high quality greetings cards, striking ceramics and other unusual gifts and crafts.
