Recently we received a collection of photographs at the museum. This one of elephants enjoying a paddle on the beach really caught our eye!
Harold Philp, one of our Committee members, recalls an incident on his way to school in Goonhavern from Rejerrah. "….as I came out the lane onto the main road, the circus was travelling from Newquay to Perranporth. The horses were pulling the caged lions and tigers, followed by two elephants. One of the staff asked me if I wanted to ride on the elephant; you can guess the answer. The elephant bent his knee for me to climb on. I then sat on his neck, held his ears and rode all the way to school."
Harold says this took place in 1939 - before the outbreak of the Second World War.
Could these be the same two elephants?
