Newlyn Arts Festival
4th – 18th October 2014

Call for proposals for:

Makers and Craftspeople in Residence in Newlyn Art Gallery
and
Artists in Residence in Village Businesses

Summary
Now in its eight year Newlyn Arts Festival, celebrates the wealth of creativity in the village; music, poetry, theatre, film, craft and art. A range of venues throughout Newlyn host concerts and events through a two week long programme each autumn.

This year, Newlyn Art Gallery is putting the spotlight on Newlyn’s craftspeople and makers, and inviting them to set up their workshops in the main gallery for a week long residency.
Artists are being invited to leave their studios and create new work in local businesses throughout the village of Newlyn during the festival.

Makers and Craftspeople in Residence in Newlyn Art Gallery: 4th-11th October
Newlyn has a wealth of makers and crafts people, many of whom are tucked away in hidden workshops. We are inviting as many as possible to relocate their workshops and studios into the gallery for a week period to continue making their work alongside other makers, with gallery visitors observing and asking questions. Some may wish to give demonstrations or talks. We hope this will raise the makers’ profiles and present a communal celebration of the continuing heritage of making in Newlyn. Though it should be seen as a residency period and not a craft fair, sales will be encouraged, with neither the gallery nor festival taking a commission. There is no fee, but assistance with transportation of equipment will be available. Makers already taking part include creel makers, jewellers, ceramicists, knitters, rag ruggers and metal workers.
If you are interested, as a maker or craftsperson, in taking part in this innovative part of the festival and would like more information please contact Simon Jaques (simon.jaques@newlynartgallery.co.uk) or Blair Todd (blair.todd@newlynartgallery.co.uk) or contact them by phone 01736 363715.
Deadline Monday 8th September.

Artists in Residence in village businesses: 4th- 18th October
While we invite makers and crafts people into the gallery, we are encouraging artists to spread out from their studios into the village. This is a great opportunity for artists to try out working in a new environment with fresh inspiration, and for the people of the village to experience artists creating new artwork in their place of work. It could be filming the chef in a busy restaurant kitchen, writing poems after conversations with community groups, drawing portraits of a pub’s regulars or taking photographs detailing a shop’s business over a week. We are open to all suggestions and imagine that four residencies will take place.
We hope that it will be a mutually fascinating time for both parties to learn about and from each other. There is no requirement to create a finished art work during the residency; the time can be used as a period of research for work that is developed over time back in the studio. The residency period can be for any length of time – one day, a series of mornings or a full two weeks; whatever is appropriate for the artist and their host business or community space. The hosts will be encouraged to display the resulting work at some stage in the future and we aim to exhibit suitable work on rotation in the Studio Cafe at Newlyn Art Gallery through 2015. A fee of up to £150 per residency is available to assist with expenses.

Detail
The residencies should all take place in Newlyn, but the opportunity is open to all artists in Cornwall. However, of course, a knowledge and familiarity with Newlyn will be beneficial when selecting your subject and host location. All residencies should take place at some point between 4th – 18th October 2014. Artists may apply individually or as a pair. The residency does not need to be visible to the public, they may well happen in behind the scenes’ spaces, but each will be publicised collectively as part of the festival. Publicity material will include website links for all the participating artists and businesses, to create as much exposure as possible for everyone.

How to apply
Your proposal should include an outline of where you would like to spend the residency and what you aim to do there and over what period of time. Please indicate how the residency will benefit your practice and/or your host venue. Please say if you have already discussed the idea in principle with the owner or manager of your proposed venue.
Please supply up to six images of your current work, with any images that are relevant to your proposed residency. Plus a brief CV and website link, if appropriate.
Please send your artists residency proposal to Simon Jaques (simon.jaques@newlynartgallery.co.uk) or Blair Todd (blair.todd@newlynartgallery.co.uk) or contact them by phone 01736 363715.
