Bude Castle Heritage Centre

The Bude Castle was once the home of Sir Goldsworthy Gurney the inventor of the Steam Carriage; the building now displays objects and exhibitions related to the history of Bude and Stratton and the surrounding parishes. In addition the Castle also houses an archive collection of maps documents, books, and photographs.

  • Sir Goldsworthy Gurney

    Cornwall is renown for its brilliant inventors and resourceful engineers. The greatest of these was Richard Trevithick, arguably the 'real' inventor of the steam engine. Sir Goldsworthy Gurney, met and was inspired by Trevithick, and in the Heritage Centre you can find out about his many ingenious innovations.

From all routes [except Widemouth Road] head for the mini roundabout at the southern end of The Strand and follow the signs to Widemouth, then take the first right.

From Widemouth take the first left after crossing the canal.
